This publication follows the tortuous course of events throughout the Congo during the four turbulent years following its independence in 1960, and presents a vivid portrayal of the leading participants in the Congo imbroglio.

Indar Jit Rikhye was appointed Military Adviser for the Congo Operations to the UN Secretary-General in July 1960, and held that post till the Congo operation ended.  He was thus in the closest possible touch throughout with the UN Secretariat in New York, with UN officials and commanders on the ground and with Congolese leaders.  He saw policy-making at close hand, and was ofen decisively involved in it.
