Strengthening Multilateral Capacity: Roundtable on Weapons of Mass Destruction

IPI’s Coping with Crisis program held a roundtable meeting on weapons of mass destruction at the Trygve Lie Center for Peace, Security, and Development. It was the second roundtable of “Task Force One: Transnational Security Challenges.”

The event opened with an overview of the task force’s work so far and an introductory discussion on the individual issues raised by weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). These topics were further analyzed in sessions dedicated to nuclear disarmament and the verification and universality of disarmament and nonproliferation instruments. The roundtable also examined the role and capabilities of the UN Security Council in addressing cases of noncompliance with nonproliferation regimes, and it developed recommendations on how to strengthen multilateral capacity in these areas.
