“Being able to provide energy for people is crucial to assure stability in any country,” said Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar and co-chair of the IPI task force on energy and security, which held its second plenary meeting in New York on September 25th, in the margins of the UN General Assembly.

In Preparing for Disaster, Coordination Saves Lives

Regional cooperation for disaster preparedness and relief in Central Asia was the topic of a July 3rd roundtable discussion held in Almaty, Kazakhstan that brought together representatives from the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, and included officials from emergency services from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, and Iran, as well as international experts on civil-military coordination for disaster risk reduction (DRR).

Energy Diplomacy in the Caspian

On June 28th, the IPI Vienna Office hosted an expert roundtable on energy and security in the Caspian, Caucasus, and Central Asia. The roundtable focused on the region around the Caspian Sea, which is potentially the world’s third largest oil producing region, with reserves of more than 200 billion barrels of oil and 800 billion cubic feet of gas.

“A global test for multilateralism is taking place,” Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, said at an event co-hosted by IPI’s Vienna office and the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna on June 26th.

IPI Launches New Report on Peace Operations and Organized Crime

On June 7th, IPI launched a new publication entitled “The Elephant in the Room: How Can Peace Operations Deal with Organized Crime?” a policy-oriented report designed to reduce the impact of crime where UN peace operations are trying to make, keep, or build peace.  



About the Office

IPI’s Vienna office is located in the Palais Harrach in the historic center of the Austrian capital, close to diplomatic missions, the Austrian foreign ministry, and the headquarters of a number of international and non-governmental organizations.
