Addressing a standing-room-only audience gathered to discuss the January 9th referendum in Southern Sudan, Hilde F. Johnson said it was crucial for the international community to "speed up the process on resolving the critical post-referendum issues and to do so urgently."

Africa’s Borders Need New Arrangements, Says Dr. Adebajo

At the Conference of Berlin in 1885, major European states divided Africa into their colonial possessions. At an IPI event launching his new book, The Curse of Berlin: Africa After the Cold War, author Dr. Adekeye Adebajo said the decision to freeze the shifting borders in 1960 may have been “wise in a sovereignty-obsessed era of insecure, unconsolidated nation states,” but, as he writes in the book, “these decisions have had long-term consequences, ultimately mobilizing earlier generations of African leaders to promote African independence and to seek control over their destiny in a more equitable global structure.”

Delaying the referendum on independence in Southern Sudan would risk resumption of civil war, the head of the region’s government said, even as the U.S. suggested it will be hard to organize a credible vote on Jan. 9.

On September 1-2, 2010, IPI’s Africa Program in collaboration with the Permanent Observer Mission of the African Union (AU) to the United Nations (UN) in New York convened a retreat of African Permanent Representatives in New York to discuss ways in which to strengthen the voice of the Africa Group at the UN.
