Ashrawi: “One Minute to Midnight” in Middle East Peace Process

“It really is one minute to midnight. We need to make, all of us, this last ditch effort," Dr. Hanan Ashrawi told an IPI audience on March 21, 2012, speaking about the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

“I think we need people who can stand up and speak out," she said. "People who understand that this is really—I don’t want to be the voice of doom, but we are reaching the end of the prospects for peace in that part of the world.”

Filippo Grandi, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), told an IPI audience that the question of accommodating the wishes of the Palestinian refugees was “suffering a particular stagnation,” leaving them profoundly frustrated at their continuing  plight six decades after the partition of the land they once inhabited.

On Friday, October 21st, IPI convened a working lunch with 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Tawakkol Karman of Yemen. The meeting was attended by senior UN officials and representatives from countries on the Security Council and from nations who play an active role in the UN.

Arab Authors Hisham Matar and Ali Al-Maqri

IPI held a lunchtime discussion with two Arab writers and intellectuals—Hisham Matar, a Libyan author based in London, and Ali Al-Maqri, a poet and novelist from Yemen—who represent the spirit of change in their respective regions. The event was moderated by Abdullah Alsaidi, IPI senior fellow and the former Ambassador of Yemen.
