Swanee Hunt on the Risk of Being “Even-Handed” in Bosnia

“Don’t be afraid to say there is an aggressor here,” Swanee Hunt, Chair of the Institute for Inclusive Security, told an IPI audience while discussing her new book, Worlds Apart: Bosnian Lessons for Global Security. Ms. Hunt served as the US Ambassador to Austria between 1993-97 and hosted negotiations and meetings focused on stabilizing the neighboring Balkan states.

Nick Martin, the President of the organization TechChange captured the essence of how crowdsourcing techniques can strengthen conflict prevention, saying, “In a conflict prevention scenario, good enough information now is probably a lot better than perfect information in two weeks.”

IPI NY Seminar: Multilateral Strategies for Conflict Prevention

Preventing the conflict that is devastating parts of the world and amounting to roughly US$8 billion per year in UN peacekeeping costs was the subject of a two-day IPI seminar, “Conflict Prevention: Toward More Effective Multilateral Strategies,” where high-level diplomats discussed conflict prevention measures and analyzed what challenges exist in tapping into their full potential.

In January 2011, Sudan is scheduled to hold two referenda in accordance with the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended the twenty-two year civil war between North and South, and while there is still uncertainty regarding many issues, it is clear that the UN system has taken on significant responsibilities in facilitating preparations for them.
