Delaunay: Negotiation Key to Gaining Humanitarian Access

“There is no predetermined space of work for humanitarian action—there is no what we would call an 'intangible right' for humanitarian space that NGOs could claim by virtue of them being true humanitarians,” Sophie Delaunay, Executive Director of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) USA  told an IPI lunchtime policy forum on April 11, 2011.

On November 1st, IPI hosted a one-day workshop, co-organized with the Permanent Mission of Portugal to the United Nations and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), to review the UN Security Council’s efforts at enhancing accountability for better protection of civilians in armed conflict.

Ray Chambers: Zero Deaths by Malaria in 2015

This bold prediction was made by Ray Chambers, Special Envoy to the Secretary-General for Malaria, at a Beyond the Headlines event at IPI on October 11th featuring the book Lifeblood: How to Change the World One Dead Mosquito at a Time and its author, Alex Perry. The book chronicles two years of Mr. Chambers’ successful campaign to reduce by hundreds of thousands the number of child deaths as a result of malaria.

Mukwege: "A Vicious Cycle of Rape, Silence, and Impunity"

Addressing a large gathering at IPI, Dr. Denis Mukwege, the renowned founder of a hospital in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that treats victims of sexual violence, spoke feelingly of the thousands of young women who, having been raped, are condemned to lives of being shunned by their families and seeing their rapists move about freely in society, unrepentant and unpunished.

Since 2006, UNITAID has raised $2.2 billion to help fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and turberculosis through a micro-tax on airplane tickets. On June 7th, UNITAID's chair, Professor Philippe Douste-Blazy, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General for Innovative Financing for Development, came to IPI to discuss the achievements of innovative financing
