Meeting on Contractor Killings for UN Special Rapporteur

Date and Time
Saturday, 21 June 2008
10:00am to 3:00pm

IPI hosted a closed-door meeting of civil society with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Professor Philip Alston, on the occasion of his Mission to the United States. The meeting, held at IPI’s Trygve Lie Center was intended to provide constructive thinking on how best to prevent and remedy contractor killings.

Specific issues considered included the adequacy of existing criminal laws, jurisdictions and administrative arrangements; contractor access to governmental immunities in civil litigation; contractual tools and remedies; and Status of Forces Agreements. Over a dozen representatives of international and domestic human rights organizations, academia, the legal sector, and civil rights activists attended.

More information about Professor Alston’s mandate and the press statement he issued at the end of his Mission can be found at http://www.extrajudicialexecutions.org/.
