IPI Co-organizes Seminar for Representatives and Envoys of the Secretary-General

IPI, (formerly International Peace Academy) co-organized the Fourth Seminar for Special and Personal Representatives and Envoys of the Secretary-General with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) from October 16 – October 18 at Le Mirador Kempinski Hotel in Mont Pèlerin, Switzerland. All current full-time representatives were invited to participate, along with the most senior staff in the relevant UN departments and agencies.

Government Contracting of Private Military and Security Companies

IPI (formerly International Peace Academy) convened a retreat last week with the support of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, ICRC, and the Greentree Foundation to generate recommendations for states contracting private military and security companies. In the wake of the recent scandal around the alleged killing of Iraqi civilians by Blackwater contractors, it is becoming all too clear how contractor misconduct eventually comes back to hurt whoever is footing the bill.

Senegalese President Delivers First Lecture in African Leaders Series

H.E. Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal, inaugurated IPA’s African Leaders Series on 25 September with a speech at the Waldorf-Astoria entitled “Consolidation of Peace in Africa and Prospects for Economic Development in Senegal.” IPI President Terje Rød-Larsen introduced President Wade, who followed his speech with a question and answer session.
