"Leaving Terrorism Behind" Brings Together Academics, UN Member States, and NGOs in New York City
IPI, in cooperation with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, convened a conference on “Leaving Terrorism Behind: Individual and Collective Disengagement from Violent Extremism,” on April 22nd. The event presented research to be included in a volume of that name, edited by Tore Bjørgo and John Horgan, examining disengagement and de-radicalization programs in Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
The conference also brought together a wide range of diplomats, academics, and practitioners, allowing participants to exchange information and lessons learned on global disengagement and de-radicalization programs. The day’s insightful discussions generated recommendations to contribute to the ongoing Working Group on De-radicalization and the UN Counterterrorism Implementation Task Force.
Upwards of 100 people gathered at the Barclay InterContinental Hotel in Manhattan to hear the presentations and engage actively in the dialogue among international experts. The event was opened by Edward Luck (IPI Senior Vice President and Director of Studies), Terje Moland Pedersen (Deputy Minister of Justice and Police, Norway), Dr. Robert Orr (Chairman, UN Counterterrorism Implementation Task Force).
