Al-Shabaab Fears Political Agenda in Western Aid Says IPI's John Hirsch

"The United Nations system is both a humanitarian aid system and political system, and it's seen as very much within a Western orbit, so a great deal of the reluctance of Al-Shabaab to allow some of these aid agencies to function has to do with their perception, whether right or wrong, that these aid agencies also represent a political agenda," says John Hirsch, IPI Senior Adviser, in this Al Jazeera report.

On February 26th, Chair Kevin Rudd and Secretary-General Hardeep Puri briefed delegates from the UN’s African Group about the ICM and its work. This was the last of a series of briefings which the Commission held during the month of February to inform UN regional groups about its vision for an effective multilateral system.

“Peace can and should be quantified,“ said Steve Killelea, Founder and Executive Chairman of the Institute for Economics and Peace while speaking at IPI’s Vienna office on January 24.
