Building Africa’s Institutional Capacities for Crisis Prevention and Response

Building on earlier policy work with the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), IPI is planning to work closely with the AU and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) to support the reinforcement of their institutional and functional capacities for crisis prevention and response and their efforts to promote good governance and development. Focus areas will include strengthening of the African Peace and Security Architecture, in particular the African Standby Force and early warning capacities, as well as supporting post-conflict peacebuilding processes. In addition to a set of established partners that include the AU, ECOWAS, and the South African Development Community (SADC), IPI is looking to initiate collaborations with new partners in these areas, including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development in Africa (IGAD) and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS). Particular efforts will be made to foster relations between these institutions and the African policy research community and to promote the sharing of practical experience across institutions.
