This month has seen some of the grimmest news in years out of Somalia, a country that has become shorthand for despair. Since a famine began sweeping the war-torn country in July, tens of thousands of Somalis have died of starvation, and many more have sought refuge elsewhere.

The Birth of South Sudan: A Difficult Road Ahead
On July 9, 2011, South Sudan became the world’s newest nation. It is the fifty-fourth sovereign nation in Africa, and the first one since Eritrea declared its independence from Ethiopia in 1993. The occasion has been greeted with much fanfare and jubilation in Juba, the capital of this new country of over 8 million people.
About This Program
Established in 1992, the Africa Program examines the capacity of Africa's regional and sub-regional organizations to prevent and respond to existing and emerging security challenges on the continent. Its primary objective is to deepen knowledge about Africa's crises, draw international attention to them, and contribute to the enhancement of institutional capacities in peace and security. In this regard, the Program works closely with the African Union, regional economic communities, the United Nations, the European Union and other partners and states to explore policy options for capacity building in sustainable peace, stability, and development.
