Appraising Efforts to Improve Conflict Management in West Africa

This report stems from the Accra seminar intended to review developments on the implementation of the ECOWAS security mechanism, assess the status of the implementation of the recommendations made at past seminars and provide recommendations to the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), and sub-regional organizations on how to improve their strategies for successful intervention in Africa.

Western Sahara: Anatomy of a Stalemate

The long-running conflict over the sovereignty of Western Sahara has involved all the states of northwest Africa and many beyond since Spain ceded the territory to Morocco and Mauritania in 1976. Erik Jensen traces the evolution of the conflict from its colonial roots to its present manifestation as a political stalemate.

On the morning of March 26, 2004, members of the UN community shared a somber minute of silence to honor the over 800,000 victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Building Peace in Eastern Africa

In collaboration with the Faculty of Social Sciences of Makerere University (Uganda) and the Africa Peace Forum (Kenya), the International Peace Academy [now International Peace Institute] hosted a seminar in Entebbe, Uganda, from December 16 to 18, 2002, to assess the challenges and opportunities for building peace in Eastern Africa.
