IPI Video: Why the 21st Century Will Be the Asia-Pacific Century

In the past few centuries, the role of the Asia-Pacific was diminished in its global influence. This is about to change. By 2030, the region's share of the world’s GDP is predicted to be 67%. It is currently home to more than half the global population, and has the fastest growing economies in the world. By all accounts, the 21st century will be the "Asia-Pacific century."

IPI, Indonesia Hold International Forum in Jakarta

IPI’s President Terje Rød-Larsen told an audience of 1,300 in Jakarta that he hoped the Jakarta International Defense Dialogue (JIDD) would become “the preeminent forum for continued multilateral cooperation in the Asia-Pacific, seeking peace, progress, and prosperity for all the peoples of the region.”

Mongolia: From Totalitarianism to Democracy in One Generation

The Foreign Minister of Mongolia, Luvsanvandan Bold, visited IPI’s Vienna office on February 28th. He spoke about Mongolia’s rapid development over the past generation. Since 1990, Mongolia has transformed from totalitarianism to democracy, and has become one of the fastest growing economies in the world due to its mineral wealth.

South Asia

With the projected increase in demand for UN peace operations worldwide, and the increasingly transnational nature of threats to human security — including climate change, terrorism, organized crime and armed conflict — there are opportunities for the UN and South Asia to develop stronger cooperation to address transnational security threats.

To that end, IPI's South Asia-related programming seeks to promote a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the region, and better connect the UN community to regional research and policy networks through a series of policy research projects and by using IPI's convening capacity to advance informal dialogue among scholars, practitioners and diplomats.

Kai Eide: Peace Can Only Be Made By Afghans

“There is no other way. The United States, or NATO, or anybody else international, cannot make peace in Afghanistan,” Kai Eide, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan from March 2008-2010, told an IPI policy forum on January 26, 2012. “We can address some of the components perhaps, but peace in Afghanistan can only be made by the Afghans themselves, and therefore the Afghan government has to be brought on board.”
