Mahiga: Somali Famine a Tragedy, But Also an Opportunity

Speaking on September 20th in the latest in the series of SRSG meetings at IPI, Augustine Mahiga, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Somalia, noted that the country had been without a government and in a state of continuing conflict for nearly 20 years, but said there were three recent developments there that made him optimistic about the future.

Africa's “King of Kings” Is Out, Long Live His Wealth!

This summer, I was invited to speak at the Africa Center's Senior Leaders Seminar on post-conflict transitions in Washington, DC. Participants were mostly senior African military leaders, and the discussion session drifted to Libya. When one officer asked what the regional implications of the conflict in Libya could be, I thought that he, as a security expert, wanted to discuss refugees, mercenaries, and weapons crossing borders. But he quickly corrected me. “The question was about economic security,” he said.

This month has seen some of the grimmest news in years out of Somalia, a country that has become shorthand for despair. Since a famine began sweeping the war-torn country in July, tens of thousands of Somalis have died of starvation, and many more have sought refuge elsewhere.

Speaking at an IPI event, Roger Meece, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, rejected the notion that the long and ongoing conflict in the DRC that has killed over five million people has created problems too complex to solve.
