Stability in the Sahel and the Maghreb: The Roles of Women, Youth, and the Elders

To counter the pervasive insecurity and violence in the Sahel and Maghreb regions, and address the political, social, and economic marginalization that have been driving them, it is urgent to devise strategies that send reassuring messages to the beleaguered populations living in these regions. This was the key message that emerged from a regional seminar organized by IPI on June 16-17, 2014 in Rabat, Morocco,

IPI Hosts Meeting on Future for Peacekeeping and Francophonia

On October 10-11, 2013, IPI hosted a fourth seminar on the role of Francophone countries in peacekeeping in New York to conclude a cycle of conferences co-organized by the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), the French Ministry of Defense’s Délégation aux Affaires stratégiques (DAS), the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Direction de la Coopération de Sécurité et de Défense (DCSD) and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP).

Learning Lessons About Peacebuilding

Strategic coordination and flexible funding of security-sector reform (SSR); disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR); and administrative and social services can help prevent relapses into armed conflict. This was the main conclusion of a roundtable discussion held at IPI and co-organized with the UN Peacebuilding Support Office on November 29, 2012.

Mozambicans’ focus on local ownership, aided by the Community of Sant’Egidio’s facilitation efforts, transformed Mozambique from a country ravaged by civil war into a possible model for sustainable peace. This was the main reflection of an IPI roundtable discussion on October 23rd, which was co-organized with George Mason University.
