On November 13, Canadian-British author and journalist Doug Saunders spoke at IPI’s Vienna Office about the challenges of sustainable urbanization. Drawing on observations made in his book Arrival City (2011), Saunders—an international affairs columnist with the Globe and Mail and five-time winner of the Canadian National Newspaper Award—pointed out that 25 million people become urbanites every week.

On June 28th, the IPI Vienna Office hosted an expert roundtable on energy and security in the Caspian, Caucasus, and Central Asia. The roundtable focused on the region around the Caspian Sea, which is potentially the world’s third largest oil producing region, with reserves of more than 200 billion barrels of oil and 800 billion cubic feet of gas.

A new task force to focus on the impact of energy on security and to examine ways of forestalling energy-related conflict was launched on January 16th at the annual World Future Energy Summit by the International Peace Institute and Masdar, a leading renewable energy company based in Abu Dhabi.

We think they are improving our livelihoods. They are changing our lives for the better.’”

“Our experience in Darfur has shown that the best partners we have are the women,” Amer Daoudi, Regional Director for Sudan at the World Food Programme (WFP) told an IPI audience on May 23, 2012. “You go around the camps, the villages… it is the women who are doing all the work. We saw an opportunity there to empower them, to give them a stronger hold on income, to manage households.”
