Malone: In Development, UN Is “Idea Incubator”

With the timeline for the Millennium Development Goals ticking down, the United Nations says its machinery is cranking at full speed to facilitate and produce the framework for a post-2015 development agenda before the General Assembly session in September. Whether that’s true or not, fortunately, the UN is an apt and important “idea incubator” for international development, contended Dr. David Malone, Rector of the United Nations University (UNU), on April 4th.

IPI President Rød-Larsen Visits Azerbaijan

On March 11-12th, a delegation from IPI led by IPI President Terje Rød-Larsen visited Baku to discuss possible cooperation with Azerbaijan. The main topics of discussion included energy and security, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as regional security and cooperation in the Caspian and Caucasus region.

The Security-Development Nexus in Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa: Notes from the Security Council Istanbul Retreat

This meeting note discusses Turkey’s growing role in Africa, and it surveys the many regional efforts to improve security and development on the continent. It summarizes the main points of discussion at the 4th Istanbul Retreat of the UN Security Council, which was held on April 6-7th, 2013 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Energy: A Source of Cooperation or Conflict in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean?

Despite the fact that countries in the Middle East have growing energy needs that could be satisfied by their neighbors, there is a lack of cooperation due to bilateral political tensions as seen between Iran and Saudi Arabia, as well as among countries in the Levant Basin (such as Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, and Syria). This was one topic of a meeting hosted by IPI on January 20th that discussed the impact of energy on security in the Middle East;

From Mud Floor to Middle Class: Doug Saunders Discusses the Rise of Urbanites

On November 13, Canadian-British author and journalist Doug Saunders spoke at IPI’s Vienna Office about the challenges of sustainable urbanization. Drawing on observations made in his book Arrival City (2011), Saunders—an international affairs columnist with the Globe and Mail and five-time winner of the Canadian National Newspaper Award—pointed out that 25 million people become urbanites every week.

Energy Diplomacy in the Caspian

On June 28th, the IPI Vienna Office hosted an expert roundtable on energy and security in the Caspian, Caucasus, and Central Asia. The roundtable focused on the region around the Caspian Sea, which is potentially the world’s third largest oil producing region, with reserves of more than 200 billion barrels of oil and 800 billion cubic feet of gas.

“We must focus on energy for peace, as well as energy for development,” said Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), at the first plenary meeting of the IPI energy and security task force held in Vienna on May 29th.

Republic of Niger Strategy for Development and Security in Sahel-Saharan Areas of the Country

As the regional implications of the crisis in Mali become apparent, there has been speculation as to whether Niger will be the next country in the region to be undermined by Islamist insurgency and separatist rebellion, transnational organized crime, and weak governance practices.

It will be difficult for fragile states to achieve peace, stability, and sustainable development unless institutional silos containing security, diplomacy, and development are broken down. This was the key conclusion at a policy forum held at the International Peace Institute on April 22, 2013, organized by the Permanent Mission of Timor-Leste to the UN, the Permanent Mission of Denmark to the UN, and IPI.
