IPI Policy Forum Addresses Crime as an Impediment to Security and Development in Africa
On the morning of Monday, September 22, 2008, IPI hosted a breakfast Policy Forum on "Crime as an Impediment to Security and Development in Africa." The meeting, chaired by IPI President Terje Rød-Larsen and UNODC Executive Director Antonio Maria Costa, considered the ways in which local and transnational crime in Africa represents both a cause and a consequence of violence, corruption, and poor governance, and the strategies that international institutions can adopt to arrest this cycle. The meeting was an official Side Event to the UN General Assembly’s High Level Meeting on Africa’s Development Needs.

African Union and UN Officials Meet to Improve Capacity Building
The International Peace Institute, in cooperation with the UN Departments of Political Affairs and Peacekeeping Operations, and the African Union (AU), convened a high-level workshop on November 7th-8th in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, titled “The Ten-Year Capacity Building Programme: Towards a Broader Understanding of AU-UN Cooperation.”

Senegalese President Delivers First Lecture in African Leaders Series
H.E. Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal, inaugurated IPI's African Leaders Series on September 25th with a speech at the Waldorf-Astoria entitled “Consolidation of Peace in Africa and Prospects for Economic Development in Senegal.” IPI President Terje Rød-Larsen introduced President Wade, who followed his speech with a question and answer session. ![]()
