The United Nations and Regional Organizations

This event, organized in partnership with the United Nations University Comparative Regional Integration Studies program (UNU-CRIS) in Bruges and the Institute of European Studies of the Free University of Brussels, took place on the eve of the constitutive meeting of a new Standing Committee created in 2005 to help deepen and institutionalize cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations (ROs).

Building Partnerships for Crisis Prevention, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding between the United Nations and Regional Organizations

On April 4-5, 2006, some thirty representatives of regional organizations (ROs), the United Nations, and experts from four continents convened in Vienna at the invitation of the International Peace Academy [now International Peace Institute] to examine how the UN and ROs could reinforce their cooperation in conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

This report stems from the Accra seminar intended to review developments on the implementation of the ECOWAS security mechanism, assess the status of the implementation of the recommendations made at past seminars and provide recommendations to the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), and sub-regional organizations on how to improve their strategies for successful intervention in Africa.

War Economies in a Regional Context

This policy report distills key findings from research commissioned by the International Peace Institute on the regional dimensions of war economies and the challenges they pose for peacemaking and peacebuilding. Drawing from analytical research as well as case studies of Afghanistan in Central Asia, Sierra Leone in West Africa, and Bosnia and Herzegovina in Southeast Europe, a number of key issues concerning the political economy of regional war economies and lessons for more effective peacebuilding were identified.
