IPI and the government of Turkey co-hosted an informal United Nations Security Council (UNSC) retreat in Istanbul on April 11-13, 2014. The retreat, in its fifth consecutive year, gathered members of the UN Security Council, as well as current chairs and high-level officials of a number of international and regional organizations to examine how the UNSC and regional organizations may more effectively work together on issues concerning international peace and security.
In an off-the-record setting, discussions sought to build upon existing mechanisms for strengthened cooperation between the Security Council and regional organizations on areas of conflict prevention, peace operations, counterterrorism, and humanitarian crises, with particular emphasis given to prevention.
A meeting note on the retreat is forthcoming from IPI.

The compilation of the IPI Security Council Compliance Database entered into a new phase on May 22, 2009 as twenty-five doctoral students began systematically assessing compliance by civil-war parties with more than 1,500 specific demands issued by the UN Security Council to them in the context of twenty-five recent civil wars.

Members of the advisory group of IPI’s project on Understanding Compliance with UN Security Council Resolutions in Civil Wars convened at IPI’s Trygve Lie Center for Peace, Security and Development on May 21, 2009 for a seminar featuring presentations and active discussions on the research question, hypotheses, and methodology of the project as well as on an early draft of a forthcoming report entitled, “The UN Security Council and Civil War: First Insights from a New Dataset.”
