Deconstructing the North-South Label

Since the end of the Cold War, many commentators have employed the North-South label to draw a dichotomy between wealthy, developed countries primarily located in the northern hemisphere (the North) and poorer, developing countries located mainly in the southern hemisphere (the South).

On June 19th, IPI convened a full-day meeting of UN member states and Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (SRSGs), with the goal of sharing lessons learned from UN field missions. The dialogue featured Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and speakers drawn from the highest levels of the UN Secretariat and was held under the Chatham House Rule.

On June 18, 2009, at the United Nations, IPI and HBO Documentary Films hosted a screening of Sergio, a film that recounts the life and death of UN diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello, who was killed during the bombing of Baghdad’s Canal Hotel in 2003.
