Despite newly promised constitutional protections, there are many challenges facing the human rights community in Zimbabwe, according to Beatrice Mtetwa, a prominent Zimbabwean human rights lawyer. She spoke on advancing the rule of law in Zimbabwe during an African Leaders Series event at the International Peace Institute on December 19th.

President of Tunisia: Africa Should Not Desert the ICC

“The [International Criminal Court] is good for Africa,” said Dr. Mohamed Marzouki, president of the Tunisian Republic, during a presentation at the International Peace institute. “This is the official position of Tunisia.” At the standing-room only IPI event on September 25, Dr. Marzouki reflected on the birth and possible death of the Arab Spring and, along with it, democracy in Africa.

In his briefing to the Security Council the day before appearing at IPI on May 10th, José Ramos-Horta, Special Representative to the Secretary-General on Guinea-Bissau, told the Council that the beleaguered country “exists in name only.”
