On Friday, September 26th, IPI together with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, cohosted the Seventh Annual Trygve Lie Symposium on Fundamental Freedoms, bringing together UN representatives, government officials, experts, and members of civil society to discuss how Human Rights Up Front can put human rights and civilian protection at the forefront of the UN agenda today.

Margaret was first and foremost a scholar and researcher at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs. She subsequently became an important voice (leader) at the African Union and the United Nations in the decades long promotion of conflict resolution and the advancement of women’s rights in Africa. She passed away on September 23, 2014.

On Monday, September 22nd, IPI held its Ninth Ministerial Dinner on the Middle East in its Trygve Lie Center for Peace, Security, and Development. The working dinner saw the participation of foreign ministers and other high-level representatives from the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and beyond.

Abdullahi acknowledged that Africa had come a long way in its quest for democratic governance, but added that it would have to address the structural causes that often plunge it into conflict in order to “be at peace with itself, secure, and corruption-free.”
