On September 6, 2012, IPI co-hosted an event with Save the Children and the Permanent Mission of Norway, entitled “Children, Youth and Peacebuilding.” The event focused on youth participation in peacebuilding efforts around the world, and featured seven teenage representatives from Uganda, Nepal, Albania, and Guatemala.

The success or failure of a UN peacekeeping operation is partly determined by the effectiveness of its individual peacekeepers. Yet the UN’s training strategy for peacekeepers remains at an embryonic stage. Systematic performance indicators to evaluate UN peacekeepers have yet to be implemented. And while the number of national, regional, and international centers for training UN peacekeepers has increased, greater coordination is needed to produce common standards and ensure that those who are trained actually deploy on UN missions.

In the wake of the crises in Mali and Guinea-Bissau in 2012, IPI co-organized a meeting with the Permanent Missions of South Africa and Azerbaijan to address the role and effectiveness of regional and international early-warning and response mechanisms.

With the projected increase in demand for UN peace operations worldwide, and the increasingly transnational nature of threats to human security — including climate change, terrorism, organized crime and armed conflict — there are opportunities for the UN and South Asia to develop stronger cooperation to address transnational security threats.
To that end, IPI's South Asia-related programming seeks to promote a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the region, and better connect the UN community to regional research and policy networks through a series of policy research projects and by using IPI's convening capacity to advance informal dialogue among scholars, practitioners and diplomats.
