"Every conflict situation is specific and complex,” said Bert Koenders, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), during an October 17th event at the International Peace Institute. “And for us as the international community,” he said, “we have to [maintain] a position of humility, realizing that only Malians can create their own solutions.”
Conferences - October 10, 2013
On October 10-11, 2013, IPI hosted a fourth seminar on the role of Francophone countries in peacekeeping in New York to conclude a cycle of conferences co-organized by the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), the French Ministry of Defense’s Délégation aux Affaires stratégiques (DAS), the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Direction de la Coopération de Sécurité et de Défense (DCSD) and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP).

On October 8th, IPI, in cooperation with International Alert (IA), organized two roundtable discussions in New York to analyze the impact of organized crime on the political economy in Mali and to assess options for a comprehensive response by the international community.

“The [International Criminal Court] is good for Africa,” said Dr. Mohamed Marzouki, president of the Tunisian Republic, during a presentation at the International Peace institute. “This is the official position of Tunisia.” At the standing-room only IPI event on September 25, Dr. Marzouki reflected on the birth and possible death of the Arab Spring and, along with it, democracy in Africa.
Panel Discussions - September 23, 2013
On September 23, 2013, a ministerial roundtable was held at IPI to discuss the role of civil society in facilitating peace and security in the Sahel region. One of the key insights discussed was that the countries of the Sahel, along with the international community’s support, have the primary responsibility to address the multifaceted challenges that led to the crisis in Mali and continue to weaken the region.

Women peace builders—on the ground and across the negotiating table—was the focus of a September 20th IPI event featuring Mary Robinson, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Great Lakes region of Africa, where she discussed why women’s voices matter in peace processes and the next steps in implementing the February 24th Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework, also known as the Framework of Hope.

“This is a UN presence on the ground, out front in Somalia in a way that it hasn’t been in a generation,” said Nicholas Kay, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Somalia, at an IPI event on September 13th, about the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM). The mission replaced the long-standing UN Political Office in Somalia (UNPOS) in June 2013.
General Announcements - September 06, 2013
On September 9 and 10, IPI, together with the Centre 4S, and the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), will co-host a high-level meeting in Tunis that will bring together officials and specialists working on the Mali issue with the objective to conduct a critical examination of the realities underlying the crises in Mali and the Sahel-Sahara and the regional and international responses crafted to address them; take stock of the challenges that lie ahead; and identify appropriate responses.
