George Sherry, an adviser to former International Peace Academy Presidents Olara Otunnu and David Malone from 1995-1998, passed away on October 21st after a long illness. George brought his extensive knowledge and insights on the Middle East and Cyprus from his long experience at the United Nations to inform conferences and publications of IPA, which changed its name to the International Peace Institute (IPI) in 2008.

In September 2011, the office of the UN Secretary-General released its first report focused specifically on preventive diplomacy; the report was subsequently discussed at the Security Council. This paper aims to contribute to these ongoing discussions by providing a primer on the UN’s work on conflict prevention and ideas for improvement.

On Friday, October 21st, IPI convened a working lunch with 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Tawakkol Karman of Yemen. The meeting was attended by senior UN officials and representatives from countries on the Security Council and from nations who play an active role in the UN.
