This meeting note summarizes the key themes of a July 3, 2013 meeting on regional civil-military coordination during disasters in Central Asia. The meeting was called because the countries of Central Asia are highly susceptible to large-scale natural disasters—in particular, earthquakes and floods—yet there is very little regional cooperation in terms of disaster preparedness and relief.

To begin the launch of her book, Talking to Arab Youth: Revolution and Counterrevolution in Egypt and Tunisia, Nur Laiq quoted the wife of Hosni Mubarak, the strongman leader who ruled Egypt for over three decades. “’Oh, it's just kids who are holding up traffic; it will pass,'” she said of the early protestors in Tahrir Square. Then, after a pause, she added, “The Mubarak regime fell a few days later."

"Every conflict situation is specific and complex,” said Bert Koenders, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), during an October 17th event at the International Peace Institute. “And for us as the international community,” he said, “we have to [maintain] a position of humility, realizing that only Malians can create their own solutions.”

Meeting Notes - October 10, 2013
This meeting note summarizes the findings of a workshop on April 26, 2013, which brought together members from the UN Secretariat, agencies, funds, and programs, along with outside experts to assess the lessons learned so far on the impact of conflict, violence, and instability on development, and to consider strategies for addressing them in the post-2015 development agenda.

On October 10-11, 2013, IPI hosted a fourth seminar on the role of Francophone countries in peacekeeping in New York to conclude a cycle of conferences co-organized by the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), the French Ministry of Defense’s Délégation aux Affaires stratégiques (DAS), the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Direction de la Coopération de Sécurité et de Défense (DCSD) and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP).
