George Sherry, an adviser to former International Peace Academy Presidents Olara Otunnu and David Malone from 1995-1998, passed away on October 21st after a long illness. George brought his extensive knowledge and insights on the Middle East and Cyprus from his long experience at the United Nations to inform conferences and publications of IPA, which changed its name to the International Peace Institute (IPI) in 2008.

Transnational criminal networks are corrupting and undermining state institutions in some countries to such an extent that they pose a threat to the state itself, according to two new reports from IPI made public on October 4th in Nairobi at a policy forum addressed by Kenyan Prime Minister Raila A. Odinga.

IPI held a lunchtime discussion with two Arab writers and intellectuals—Hisham Matar, a Libyan author based in London, and Ali Al-Maqri, a poet and novelist from Yemen—who represent the spirit of change in their respective regions. The event was moderated by Abdullah Alsaidi, IPI senior fellow and the former Ambassador of Yemen.

This summer, I was invited to speak at the Africa Center's Senior Leaders Seminar on post-conflict transitions in Washington, DC. Participants were mostly senior African military leaders, and the discussion session drifted to Libya. When one officer asked what the regional implications of the conflict in Libya could be, I thought that he, as a security expert, wanted to discuss refugees, mercenaries, and weapons crossing borders. But he quickly corrected me. “The question was about economic security,” he said.
