This report presents a summary of the presentations and discussions during a meeting of the UN Security Council, members of the UN Secretariat, and a select group of experts on conflict management efforts in Africa held on August 8, 2001. The meeting was hosted by the Colombia Mission to the United Nations, during its Presidency of the Security Council, in collaboration with IPA’s [now IPI] Africa Program. Drawing on experiences from West Africa and the Great Lakes region, a case was made for the Security Council to consider regional dynamics and frameworks in addressing conflicts in Africa.
