From the Introduction: To address both global and regional trends in peace operations, this paper is divided into three parts. The first gives a brief overview of the operational and political evolution of peacekeeping from the mid-1990s to the present. The second provides a more detailed analysis of the conceptual and normative context for current and future operations. The third maps regional trends in the supply of and demand for peacekeepers. We do not attempt to make concrete predictions as to when and where future operations will be required, or how to conduct them. But it is likely that the combination of global and regional factors we identify will shape future deployments.
