In Pursuit of Peace and Security: SRSGs and the UN Security Council

On November 19th, 2012, IPI, together with the Research Project on SRSGs at the Department of Political Science, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena (Germany), convened a roundtable workshop to discuss the role of the Special Representatives of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) and their relationship with the UN Security Council.

The meeting, held under the Chatham House Rule of non-attribution, brought together former and active SRSGs, members of staff of the UN Secretariat, UN experts, and representatives of member states and academia to identify specific resources, opportunities and constraints of SRSG leadership vis-à-vis the UN Security Council. The broader aim of the workshop was to elaborate more specific and appropriate tools for understanding, analyzing, and applying relational leadership exercised by SRSGs in their interaction with the Security Council.
