IPI President Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein and ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric Discuss the Necessity for Limitations on War and Respect for the Geneva Conventions

IPI conducted a Global Leaders Series interview with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric, on the sidelines of a closed-door roundtable discussion titled “Wars Have Limits: Ensuring Better Respect for the Geneva Conventions 75 Years On,” moderated by IPI President Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

The interview addressed the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, highlighting their status as a robust global normative framework despite recent violations in conflicts such as Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan. Underscoring the current conflicts’ unique challenges, it was noted that while violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) are not new, the scale and visibility of these breaches have intensified.

The interview also delved into underutilized tools that could enhance the enforcement of IHL and strengthen its principles, and the need for more effective international collaboration.
