IPI Hosts Foreign Ministers, Officials at 19th Annual Middle East Dinner, September 22nd
On Sunday, September 22, 2024, IPI held its nineteenth annual Ministerial Working Dinner on the Middle East in its Trygve Lie Center for Peace, Security, and Development. The event was chaired by IPI President Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein and co-hosted by Qatar and the European Union, represented respectively by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar, and Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. Leading the Energy Transformation: Navigating a Just Transition to 1.5°C, September 23rd
Against the background of the opening of the UN General Assembly and drawing on the unique values and leadership position of The Elders, IPI held a high-level policy forum with H.E. Mary Robinson and other senior thought leaders to discuss the energy transition and how to accelerate action. Building digital public infrastructure (DPI) is becoming a global priority. Throughout the negotiations of the Global Digital Compact (GDC), DPI has emerged as a priority area, and its adoption may pave the way for DPI’s widespread implementation. As nations build these society-wide digital systems, concerns about equity, safety, and inclusivity are growing. The Rohingya, Rakhine, and the future of Myanmar: Delivering on the promise of Security Council Resolution 2669
Since resolution 2669 was adopted, there have been significant changes to the situation in Rakhine State. In the context of the ongoing crisis, IPI and Suu Foundation cohosted an event focusing on the current issues and crafting ways forward that enable the international community to support effective and lasting solutions to the conflict in Rakhine as part of the struggle for freedom in Myanmar. Women, Peace, and Leadership Symposium on Connecting the International and the Local: WPS on the Ground, September 25th
This symposium aims to ensure that WPS is not only discussed within the UN Security Council during “WPS week” in October but is also integrated into broader high-level discussions at the UN. The Symposium consisted of a ministerial-level panel conversation and allowed member state representatives, UN representatives, and civil society leaders to share their experiences in implementing WPS at the national and local levels including by mainstreaming gender perspectives in their foreign policies. Panelists shared their unique experiences and lessons learned, to move beyond surface-level calls to implement WPS and towards realizing the full vision of the WPS agenda in practice. Read more>>

The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Foreign Ministers of Norway and Algeria, and the International Peace Institute (IPI) hosted a roundtable discussion exploring ideas for how the international community can work better together to have stronger, more effective protective interpretations of IHL, which will ultimately reduce the cost and trauma of war and contribute to the creation of lasting peace. The Annual Trygve Lie Symposium on Fundamental Freedoms seeks to explore ways in which the international community can strengthen its promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. This year’s symposium focused on media freedom as a fundamental freedom and a human right. The event brought together high-level UN and government officials, experts, and civil society representatives to discuss and address how the international community can contribute to the protection of media freedom and the safety of journalists. 2024: The Turning Point for Innovative Financing and Solidarity Levies? September 27th
We are at an inflection point in the long battle for new global taxes for sustainable development and for climate change. All major IFA reform agendas promote the use of new taxes and levies to fund climate and development. With COP29 around the corner, this event presented the work of the Task Force, including the aviation levy, and encouraged a candid discussion on the way forward to increase momentum in adopting some of these innovative sources of funding in the near future.
