Leadership and Management Training

IPI was founded in 1970 as a training academy for the United Nations and offers training seminars by invitation in diplomacy, negotiation and conflict resolution.

Management Handbook for Civilian Staff in UN Peace Operations

IPI partnered with a number of practitioners, researchers, and experts to produce a one-of-a-kind handbook on management for civilian staff in UN peace operations. This resource is aimed at filling a critical gap in the management of the UN’s many field operations around the world. The Management Handbook for UN Field Missions introduces critical concepts of management theory while offering practical tools and real-life examples of good management practice from UN field missions.

Featuring twelve chapters, the handbook opens by examining management issues at a strategic level: organization & coordination, leadership, and planning. The next section covers the set of management skills that any successful manager has learned to master: communication, managing people, decision-making, and time management. The final chapters on knowledge management, security, financial management, project management, and evaluation outline how an organization is run prudently, efficiently, predictably, and with maximum impact.

African Junior Professionals Program

Since 2008, IPI has worked in partnership with the African Leadership Centre to bring a select group of African scholars to New York to study the evolving role of the United Nations on African peace and security issues. The African Junior Professionals Fellowship Program provides the scholars with intensive exposure to the work of the UN Secretariat, as well as interaction with New York-based academic institutions and think tanks. The one-month program is by invitation only and aims to develop the skills of the next generation of professionals who will be engaged in managing, and ultimately leading, African institutions in the coming years. IPI has hosted 73 African scholars since the program began.

IPI New York Seminar

Since 1996, the International Peace Institute (IPI) has held an annual seminar on peace and security for the New York-based UN community. The IPI New York Seminar is designed to foster professional development and informal policy discussions among representatives of member states, the UN Secretariat and specialized agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and independent experts. Its objective is to deepen the expertise of participants on critical policy issues. The seminar also provides participants with an opportunity to compare different regional and national experiences and to develop closer professional relationships.

Training Seminars and Fellowships

Upon request, IPI offers tailored training activities for government members on regional issues (Africa and the Middle East) or thematic issues related to IPI’s programs. These include customized training exercises, course curricula, literature reviews, and specially selected speakers and instructors.

IPI also welcomes nominations of government representatives to undertake fellowships of up to one year at IPI’s New York and Vienna offices. The Fellows undertake a research project, to be agreed upon in advance with IPI, with support from the Institute’s experts and staff.
